San Leandro Library Honors Native American Heritage Month with the California Indian Basket Weavers’ Association (CIBA)

SAN LEANDRO, CA: The San Leandro Public Library invites residents to attend a workshop on bear grass braiding in the History Room with the California Indian Basketweavers’ Association (CIBA). This event is in honor of Native American Heritage Month and will be free to the first 15 registrants, 12 years of age and older. The Main Library is located at 300 Estudillo Avenue in Downtown San Leandro.

WHEN:          November 17, 2018 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Alice Lincoln-Cook, a member of the Karuk and Vice-Chairwoman of the California Indian Basketweavers’ Association (CIBA), will lead the hands-on workshop. She will begin the workshop by discussing the tradition of gathering bear grass and its importance to the Native American people of California. Attendees will learn how to create their own jewelry with bear grass. Supplies will be provided. A wait list will be created after the class is full. The sign-up sheet is available at the Library’s Information Desk for interested participants.

CIBA organization is dedicated to preserving, promoting and perpetuating California Indian basketry traditions. Members accomplish this objective by raising awareness and providing education for Native Americans, the public, educational groups and environmental groups of the artistry, practices and concerns of Native American basket weavers.
