City of San Leandro Accepting Applications for the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Oratorical Festival and Poetry Slam 2019

SAN LEANDRO, CA: The City of San Leandro Recreation and Human Services Department invites interested participants to apply for the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Oratorical Festival and Poetry Slam 2019. The Festival and Poetry Slam is the City of San Leandro’s annual celebration in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. where participants can share their original poetry or prose or those of Dr. King or another author whose work captures the spirit of Dr. King.The event commemorates the birthday of this great American leader and his lifelong work toward equality and peace.

In order to apply to participate, individuals must submit an application, including the poetry piece intended to share at the Festival. Applications must be submitted by January 14, 2019. San Leandro school students in 3rd through 12th grades have the opportunity to participate. There will be three age divisions: elementary students in third to fifth grades, middle school students in sixth through eighth grades, and high school students from ninth through twelfth grades. First and second place winners in each division will receive a $100 or $50 cash gift certificate. All participants receive a Certificate of Participation.

The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Oratorical Festival and Poetry Slam recruitment process is only open to the first 25 applicants.
