April 2011 marks the 43rd anniversary of the passage of Title VIII of the United States Civil Rights Act of 1968, the Federal Fair Housing Law, which makes it unlawful to discriminate in housing transactions based on race, color, national origin, religion, gender, disability, or family status. Annually, Fair Housing Month is celebrated across the country each April to commemorate the passage of the Fair Housing Act.
In recognizing and promoting the importance of ending housing discrimination and creating equal housing opportunity for all, the City of San Leandro, at the April 4 City Council meeting, issued a Mayoral Proclamation declaring April 2011 as "Fair Housing Month" in the city. Fair Housing flyers and posters educating the public and housing providers about their fair housing rights and responsibilities will be posted in City Hall and at the Main Library for the entire month of April.
