San Leandro, CA: Former San Leandro City Councilmember and Mayor Tony Santos passed away yesterday, on Monday, April 15, 2019. He was a beloved figure and known by many as a tireless advocate for the community. Santos’ local elected service in San Leandro marked one of the longest tenures in City history.
Mayor Pauline Russo Cutter directed City flags lowered to half-staff in his honor. Santos was first elected to the City Council in 1984, and served eight years until 1992. He then served again as a Council Member from 2000 to 2006, before being elected as Mayor of San Leandro through 2010. In total, he dedicated 18 years of service as an elected official in San Leandro. During his public service tenure, he also served on the League of California Cities and a variety of internal and intergovernmental agencies.
“San Leandro has benefitted greatly from former Mayor Santos’s tireless work, which helped bring many notable developments to our community,” said Mayor Cutter. “Tony was a dear friend and an example of the public servant we all aspire to be. Our thoughts are with Tony’s beloved wife and partner Melitta, his entire family, and their many friends at this time.”
“We are deeply saddened by the passing of an outstanding public servant and long-time San Leandro resident,” added City Manager Jeff Kay. “Tony was the Mayor when I began my career in San Leandro and I admired his friendliness, positive attitude, and commitment to working with our staff to best serve the community.”
Under Santos’ leadership, the City of San Leandro expanded and preserved open spaces, broke ground on the New Kaiser Permanente campus, constructed affordable housing for seniors, and approved the Senior Community Center building that now serves thousands of visitors each year.
Former Mayor Santos’ legacy of public service is being carried on by his son Michael, who currently serves on the City of San Leandro’s Planning Commission and Board of Zoning Adjustments.
